Ashlyn sat on the edge of Gabriel’s big bed, waiting for him. Still naked, her hands now bound behind her back, she wanted to cry. But not because of her naked and well-used state; no, these were the things she loved. She wanted to cry because she loved this, loved it all: the flogging, the bondage, the pain, the sex, the exquisite pleasure it all brought.

How was this possible?

How could she love these things? Did it mean she was crazy, twisted somehow? And yet, she couldn’t find it within herself to leave, to turn her back on everything Gabriel had shown her, taught her. She couldn’t turn her back on him.

This had been meant to be a sexual experiment, an exploration of her fantasies. She wasn’t meant to fall for him. But there it was. She wasn’t sure exactly when, or how, it had happened. And she wasn’t certain yet that she could call it love. But it was something, something big and intense and frightening.

There was so much to be afraid of. Her own dark yearnings, her feelings for Gabriel—a man who could have any woman he wanted, and probably had. She was foolish to think that anything more than their play would come out of this. But what if…?

She shook her head. Things had spiraled out of control so quickly, she’d hardly had a chance to think about it. Suddenly her mind was working at a hundred miles an hour, searching for answers to too many questions.

Who was she, really, now that she had done these wicked things? Wasn’t this proof of her intrinsic weakness, that she could give over her body and her well-being to another person? That she loved it, needed it? What did it mean? About her, about who she was in the world? Had she really changed so much that she would have to rethink her entire life?

And then there was him. He was far too enigmatic for her to ever figure out. She would never presume to even guess at what was on his mind, in his heart. He was too good at what he did, too experienced, his true self shuttered behind his expertise. She’d be a fool ever to presume otherwise.

She’d be a fool to fall for him.

She wouldn’t admit that she had, not even to herself, even though the idea of it nagged at the corners of her mind. She would fight against it. She couldn’t allow that to happen. This beautiful, clever, wonderful man who made her feel more alive than she ever had before. But it was this same man who had brought on all of this self-doubt, this sense of spinning out of control.

She had to make very sure that, no matter what happened, no matter what they did together, she stayed true to herself, kept who she was intact.

If only she were sure of exactly who that was.
